NFL Team Offense and Defense Rankings: How to Read the Stats

NFL Team Statistics

Team offense and defense rankings help explain why one NFL team scores consistently while another struggles to finish drives or stop opponents. No single statistic tells the whole story. Points, yards, efficiency, turnovers and the quality of opponents all add useful context.

Official current statistics

Use the NFL’s official 2026 team offense statistics and its defensive passing statistics for season-to-date numbers. Totals change as games are played.

What to compare on offense

  • Points scored: the most direct measure of scoreboard production, but it can be affected by defensive and special-teams scores.
  • Passing and rushing output: shows how teams move the ball, though total yards can reflect pace and number of possessions.
  • Efficiency: yards per play, third-down conversion and red-zone results help show whether drives turn into meaningful gains and points.
  • Turnovers: interceptions and lost fumbles can erase drives and change field position.

What to compare on defense

  • Points allowed: the ultimate scoreboard measure, while remembering that defenses can be put in difficult positions by turnovers.
  • Passing and rushing allowed: useful for finding strengths and weaknesses, best read with yards per attempt and situational performance.
  • Pressure and takeaways: sacks, interceptions and forced fumbles can disrupt opposing offenses.
  • Red-zone defense: shows how often opponents turn trips near the goal line into touchdowns or other scores.

Why rankings can change week to week

A team can gain yards without scoring efficiently, or allow many yards while limiting touchdowns. Injuries, opponent quality, turnovers and game script can all move a team’s numbers. For that reason, a ranking should use multiple measures and should identify the season or week being compared.
