NFL Scouting Reports: Traits, Film, Production and Player Projection

Player Evaluation Guide

A scouting report describes how a player performs, which traits translate to the next level and what still needs development. Good reports separate observable evidence from projection and explain uncertainty rather than declaring a prospect’s future with certainty.

What a useful scouting report covers

  • Film and role: what the player does in real game situations and how the scheme shapes those assignments.
  • Position traits: quarterbacks are assessed for processing, timing, accuracy and pressure response; receivers for route-running and ball skills; linemen for leverage, footwork and strength.
  • Production: college or professional statistics, with context about opponents and opportunities.
  • Athletic testing: workout measures can add information, but should not replace game evidence.
  • Development areas: specific improvements the player may need, described as evaluation rather than fact about future performance.

Use scouting reports carefully

Rankings and projections differ among analysts and can change as additional film, competition and medical information become available. Check the report’s date and source, and compare it with actual performance after the player enters the NFL.
