This is another last-ball thriller. MI won their first match on the last ball, and this is the first time they have successfully chased a 170+ run target against Delhi. In the 19th over of Mustafizur Rahman, two sixes were hit – one over deep mid-wicket by the 17.50 Cr man, Cameron Green (17*), and another over wide long-on by the ‘Impact Player,’ Tim David (13*) – which brought the first win for Mumbai Indians.

The last over was bowled by Anrich Nortje and was the main essence of the match. MI needed just 5 runs in 6 balls, but Nortje almost pulled the win out of MI’s hands. The last overs is:

  • First: Yorker, Green plays down the leg for a single.
  • Second: A 146 kmph ball outside off stump, David played it in the air, but Mukesh dropped the catch. No runs.
  • Third: Another leg stump yorker, the batsman thought it was a wide, so DC took a review, and the ball was adjudged as no run.
  • Fourth: Low full toss at off stump, David takes a single at deep cover.
  • Fifth: Another perfect yorker, pushed over midwicket by Green.
  • Sixth: A fuller length ball played by David at long off. Two runs were scored on this ball. There was a chance of run-out, but Warner’s throw was too high, allowing David to get in with a dive.

Praveen Amre’s suggestions were reflected in the Delhi Capitals’ Batting as they scored of 51 runs for one wicket in the powerplay. David Warner once again scored slowly, taking 47 balls to score 51 runs at a strike rate of 108.51. Player of the match : Rohit Sharma

What they said:

Rohit Sharma : Winning the game is the most important. We have been working hard from the first game. We had a camp in Mumbai, getting the result (in our favour) feels good. First win is always special. We played a Test match here recently, the pitch looked different. Getting a slow bowler was important on this pitch. The spinners kept us in the game. We needed to bat well to chase the total. I thought everyone put their hand up. We had to make it count for the team. I needed to make use of the powerplay, I knew we had to keep attacking and take our chances. I tried to create a partnership, had a good communication with Tilak. It was important for us to have a good partnership. We have young guys who haven’t played IPL before, so it’s important to have faith in them. Give them that confidence, and we are trying to have a healthy atmosphere in the dressing room. Don’t need to make drastic changes, that’s really important.

David Warner: You look at the last three IPL games we have witnessed, they have been amazing. Wrong end of it today, but the guys were fantastic. Rohit played a fantastic knock at the top of the order. Nortje is world-class and that’s what we expect from him, Mustafiz too. Timmy David was on the wrong side of it, so I tried to keep it at stump-height. I think from the last three games, we’ve some positives but we shouldn’t lost wickets in clumps. Axar should bat in the top four the way he is striking the ball. From the last three games we have played, there are a lot of positives.
