The Pittsburgh Steelers have bolstered their secondary with the addition of cornerback Anthony Averett. The six-year veteran signed a one-year deal with the team on May 12th after impressing during a rookie minicamp tryout.
Averett, a former fourth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2018, brings a wealth of experience to Pittsburgh. He’s appeared in 51 career games, starting 27 of them. During his time with the Ravens, he racked up 101 tackles, 22 passes defensed, and three interceptions.
After four seasons in Baltimore, Averett moved on to the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. Injuries limited him to just seven games and six starts with the Raiders. He then signed with the San Francisco 49ers in August 2023 but was released before the regular season began. He had a brief stint on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad later in 2023.
Healthy and looking for a fresh start, Averett caught the eye of the Steelers at their minicamp. At 29 years old, he’s hoping to provide depth and competition in the Steelers’ secondary.
“I’m finally fully healthy and I’m definitely in shape,” Averett said after signing with the Steelers. “I’ve got plenty of juice left.”
Averett is familiar with Acrisure Stadium, the Steelers’ home field, having played there previously. He’s excited to be a part of the Steelers’ organization and contribute to their success.
