Patriots vs Seahawks Week 1: what to watch
Sunday is not the start of the NFL season.
Wednesday is.
The Seattle Seahawks hosted the New England Patriots at 8:20 p.m. ET. NBC had it. Peacock streamed it. The building was loud before the anthem.
This was a Super Bowl rematch. Seattle won the last one that counted. New England had to walk into that noise and live there.
Five days of the league could wait. This night could not.
Why this game was first
The NFL put the champions on a weeknight on purpose.
Title teams open at home. Rematches sell. A Wednesday kickoff means the country has nothing else on. No doubleheaders. One drive at a time.
Seattle was defending a title on its own field. New England was the team that already lost to them when everything was on the line.
That is not Week 12 filler. That is a statement window.
What Seattle had to prove
Champions get the benefit of the doubt until they do not.
A February trophy does not travel by itself into September. Opening night is where a roster shows if the hangover is real.
Watch the first third down.
Watch whether Seattle can close a half without getting sloppy. This desk already wrote the other version of that night — the 38–37 finish against the Rams, when a dead game stood up. Opening night is the opposite job. You are supposed to look like the last team standing. You are not supposed to need a miracle.
If the Seahawks pin New England and the crowd never sits down, the rematch was booked correctly.
If New England is still in the play-clock late, Seattle has a long year of questions.
What New England brought west
The Patriots did not fly across the country to clap.
Road openers against the champs are how a young roster finds out if it is real. There is no quiet possession in that stadium. Every incompletion is noise. Every flag is a chant.
New England has to answer two things before halftime.
Can they stay on schedule on early downs?
Can they keep the quarterback clean when Seattle tees off?
If both answers are no, this game gets away in the second quarter. Title defenses do not wait for you to settle in.
If both answers are yes, Wednesday stops being a ceremony. It becomes a problem for the NFC.

- The first scoring drive. Who looks scripted. Who looks rushed.
- The red zone. Champions finish. Visitors settle for threes.
- The two-minute drill before half. Sloppy here, and the crowd turns from fuel to pressure.
- Fourth quarter, one-score game. Then you learn if the rematch was marketing or football.
The take
Seattle should have been favored at home. That was not the interesting part.
The interesting part was tone.
If the Seahawks look like a title team for three hours, the next five months get simpler. Everyone else is chasing.
If the Patriots leave with a win — or a near miss that feels like one — the rematch was not a reunion. It was a warning.
Wednesday night does not hand out a trophy. It decides whether this season starts with a champion in control, or a champion on notice.
