India edged New Zealand by four runs under the DLS method in a rain-shortened second ODI at Wellington, moving 2–0 ahead in the five-match series. New Zealand were dismissed for 134, but India’s chase became tense before rain and the revised target settled the result.
| Team | Score | Overs | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | 134 all out | 41.0 | Lost by 4 runs (DLS) |
| India | 113/7 | 26.0 | Won by 4 runs (DLS) |
Gurnoor Brar leads India’s bowling effort
India’s fast bowlers made the most of the conditions at Hnry Stadium. Gurnoor Brar took four wickets for 30 runs, using the bounce and movement available in Wellington to break through New Zealand’s middle and lower order. Daryl Mitchell top-scored for the hosts with 55 from 104 balls, while Mitchell Santner added 31.
New Zealand never found a sustained partnership after the early wickets. The innings ended at 134 in 41 overs, leaving India a modest target but one that became complicated by the weather.
India’s chase turns into a DLS calculation
India’s innings was interrupted by rain, and the match was reduced to 26 overs. The visitors were 113/7 when the game reached its final state, enough to finish four runs ahead under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. The victory was not comfortable, but it gave India a 2–0 series lead.
Rohit Sharma scored 23 from 28 balls and struck two sixes. Those sixes also carried a milestone: Rohit moved to 51 ODI sixes against New Zealand, passing Shahid Afridi’s previous mark of 50.
What the result means for the series
New Zealand now need to win the remaining three matches to take the series. India have built a two-match cushion, but the rain-affected finish showed that the hosts remain capable of making the contests difficult when their bowlers find movement.
