Monday night was the exam.
Patrick Mahomes passed it. Kenneth Walker stole it. Kansas City beat Denver 31–10 at Arrowhead and closed Week 1.
What Mahomes looked like
This was his first game since tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee last December. He wore a brace. He still ran one in from 15 yards on the opening drive.
He finished 15-of-27 for 184 yards, two passing touchdowns, one interception. The arm was not vintage Mahomes. The legs were the point. Denver had to account for them. That is the first data point, not a Super Bowl tape.
Walker, then Kelce
Walker carried 23 times for 173 yards in his Chiefs debut. He scored on the ground and through the air. One of the runs was 60 yards. Kansas City finished with 220 rush yards. Denver finished with 176 yards of offense.
Travis Kelce was quiet until he was not. Midway through the third quarter he caught a short ball on third-and-6 and took it 59 yards. Longest reception since 2021. Harrison Butker kicked the field goal that made the night feel settled.
That is the connection the summer story asked about. One play does not prove a season. It does prove the exam was not empty.
What Denver never became
Bo Nix hit Evan Engram for 19 yards and a tie at 7–7. After that opening script, Denver’s longest drive the rest of the night gained 20 yards. Nix was sacked four times. He threw a pick. He lost a fumble. Jaylen Waddle’s first night in orange did not move the scoreboard.
The AFC West crown Denver took last year did not survive the first Monday.

Mahomes was good enough to win and not good enough to end the questions. Walker was the reason the questions did not matter for three hours.
