- QB1 — Daniel Jones. Started Weeks 1, 2, and 3. Colts 1–2.
- QB2 — Anthony Richardson. Named backup Sept. 3. Has not appeared in a box.
- QB3 — Riley Leonard. 2025 sixth-round pick. Lost the backup job in camp.
How the room got here
Richardson asked out. The trade never came. Steichen named him QB2 anyway. The fight was with Leonard. Richardson won the bench. The full story: Anthony Richardson named Colts QB2.
Jones is the present. Richardson is the emergency and the unfinished first-round pick. Leonard still has years left on his rookie deal. Richardson is the one whose next contract could hinge on what happens when he gets his chance.
What the first three weeks showed
Week 1. Baltimore 41, Indianapolis 23. Jones started. Richardson stayed on the sideline. Recap: Ravens 41, Colts 23.
Week 2. Kansas City 33, Indianapolis 30 in overtime. Jones went 22-of-31 for 210 yards, one touchdown, one interception. Richardson does not appear in the box. Recap: Chiefs 33, Colts 30 OT.
Week 3. Indianapolis 19, Houston 17. Jones started and finished: 24-of-36, 235 yards, one touchdown, one interception, two lost fumbles. Spencer Shrader was 4-for-4, including the 53-yarder with 16 seconds left. Richardson does not appear in the box. The nine-game skid is over. The room did not move. Board: NFL Week 3 schedule 2026.
Three starts do not close the room. They set the default. Until Steichen says otherwise, Jones takes the first snap.
What is next

Indianapolis has a starter who ended the skid and still lost two footballs on the way. The backup is the same name as Sept. 3.
