How to read the table: “Carries” counts rushing attempts, “rush yards” counts yards gained on those attempts, and “rush TDs” counts touchdowns scored as a runner. The 2026 row is an in-season total, not a completed season. Source: NFL.com career statistics.

What stands out in Allen’s rushing record?

His rushing value is more than scrambling. Allen’s career totals show consistent designed runs, scrambles and goal-line contributions. His 2021 and 2022 seasons both produced more than 750 rushing yards, while he scored a career-high 15 rushing touchdowns in 2023. His 2025 season added 579 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in 17 games.

Touchdowns tell a different story from yardage. Allen’s 2023 total of 15 rushing touchdowns was his highest among the seasons shown, even though his rushing yards that year were 524. A quarterback can be particularly valuable near the goal line without posting his largest yardage total.

Yards per carry vary by season. Allen recorded 6.2 yards per carry in both 2021 and 2022, 4.7 in 2023 and 5.2 in each of 2024 and 2025. These averages are influenced by running style, opponent, play calls and the mix of designed runs and scrambles, so one season alone does not define his ability.

Why Allen’s rushing matters to Buffalo

A quarterback who can gain yards with his legs creates another assignment for a defense. Defenders must account for the possibility that Allen keeps the ball on a designed run or escapes the pocket when coverage takes away his receivers. That threat can help sustain drives and provides Buffalo another option in short-yardage and goal-line situations.

Rushing also carries contact and durability considerations for any quarterback. Yardage and touchdowns show production, but they do not alone measure the cost of those carries or the full effect on the offense. The numbers are most useful alongside Allen’s passing performance and Buffalo’s offensive context.

How far can Josh Allen throw?

Allen’s running ability is only one side of his dual-threat game. See our companion article, How Far Can Josh Allen Throw the Football?, for a separate look at arm strength and passing-distance claims. The rushing and throwing figures should be evaluated separately because they measure different parts of his game.
